RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of approach shafts down to the site... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces involved in this mission for their skill and their bravery," he said. "They were among thousands of UK service members deployed over the holidays. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
