Space Traveler Discloses Emotional Distress After Wave of Harassment Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also featured high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a public message, recalling a check-in call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her scientific research and years of training to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.
She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.
Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after an attack during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.
A Path to Recovery
In the time since reaching space, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the followers whose support were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she said.
She concluded that even with the backlash, considerable good had come out of the experience, including increased focus on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
The Historic Journey
The self-operating New Shepard rocket departed Texas in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that crossed the Kármán line of outer space.
The team of pioneers also comprised leaders in various fields.
The company behind the mission is a private space firm launched by a Amazon founder.
